Botanical Plaster Casting
Join artist Eloise Pilbeam for a relaxed, hands-on Botanical Plaster Casting Workshop at Southern Maltings this October.
In this workshop, you will explore the process of “Sprig Mould” making to create your own sculptural plaster tile inspired by plants and natural forms.
You will begin by choosing from a collection of flowers, leaves, grasses, seeds, pods and other botanical finds, arranging and pressing them into clay to create your own unique sprig mould. The botanicals are then carefully removed before plaster is poured into the mould, capturing all of their delicate textures, shapes and impressions.
After pouring your plaster, your piece will need approximately 2½ hours to set before it can be removed from the mould. Participants will be asked to leave their artwork to set and return to Southern Maltings later in the day for the exciting final stage – demoulding and revealing your finished botanical relief!
You will then be able to take your sculptural artwork home with you.

Session 1
Workshop: 10:00am–11:30am
Return to demould and collect artwork: 2:30pm
Session 2
Workshop: 12:00pm–1:30pm
Return to demould and collect artwork: 4:30pm
Session 3
Workshop: 2:00pm–3:30pm
Return to demould and collect artwork: 6:00pm
Please note: Your plaster artwork needs time to fully set before it can be removed from its mould, so participants will need to return at the time shown above to demould and collect their finished piece.

Who can take part?
Adults and children aged 6+ are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Do I need any experience?
Not at all! The workshop is completely beginner-friendly and Eloise will guide you through the process step by step.
What is provided?
All materials and botanical elements will be provided.
What should I wear?
Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting a little messy, as we will be working with materials including clay and plaster. Bring an apron if you have one!

Refreshments
Refreshments will be available to purchase from the Southern Maltings Café, so there will be plenty of opportunity to grab something to eat or drink while you’re there.
