I am a visual artist.
My creative practice has developed through a combination of fine-art training, professional experience in the film and theatre industries, and a lifelong fascination with making things by hand.
I studied Fine Art before completing a Master’s in Prosthetic Effects at Falmouth University, where I developed specialist skills in sculpting, mould-making, casting and material processes. I went on to spend several years working professionally within the creative industries, making props, puppets and specialist pieces for theatre and film.
Alongside my professional making practice, I have since completed a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Bringing together my experience as an artist, professional maker and teacher has led naturally to the next stage of my practice: creating hands-on workshops where I can share the techniques and processes I love with others.
I love the smell of a sudden summer downpour, it takes me back to living in Zimbabwe as a child. I love cooking outside over fire. I love to collect weathered items such as stones, shells, gnarly old rope and bits of net, rusty metal and broken machine parts, keys, glass, bones, and really fragile fabric.
What is your work about?
I spent part of my childhood living in Zimbabwe, and my connection to wilderness, texture and the elements continues to find its way into my work. My work explores the relationship between the spirit, the human body and our place within the world. Through abstract and symbolic forms and tactile processes, I’m interested in the idea of the body as a container — a physical vessel animated by spirit, memory and experience.
What materials do you use?
Material and texture are an important part of my practice. And I am often drawn to weathered, imperfect surfaces and materials that already carry a sense of history, from weathered rope, rusted metal and found or repurposed objects to delicate botanicals foraged from the landscape. I often work intuitively with these materials, allowing their natural textures, imperfections and previous lives to become part of the finished piece. I’m drawn to these qualities because they reveal something raw and unapologetically truthful about existence. Rather than masking imperfection or striving for something sterile and flawless, I want to celebrate the marks of time, use, decay and transformation — the traces that reveal that something has lived.
Do you take commissions?
I’ love to hear from you and learn more about possible projects or collaborations or if you are interesting in purchasing any work. I also offer group workshops, private creative experiences, pre-wedding and hen celebrations, birthdays, corporate workshops and one-to-one tuition, with sessions that can be tailored to the occasion.
